My guess is that it's a stock numbr with the karat stamp added to it.. It most likely reads like this
3HD295 = stock number
14K = karat of metal used..

Maybe, we were sold these (used) as real diamonds. They are so bright and brilliant though thta sometimes it makes me question the validity. I suppose we should take them to be checked. How does a person go about doing that?

Not sure what you mean with the first part of your statement, but having the diamonds verified as 'real' takes a couple minutes and just about any competent jeweler will tell you if they are real or not for free..
A full appraisal will require some payment on your part though..
