is there a quick way and sure fire way to tell fake diamonds from real ones? heard that the classic scratch-a-piece-of-glass method does not work
how to tell fakes apart?

The best answer I can give you, is that since the difference may be thousands of dollars....
Let an expert make the separation for you.
There are many imitations as well as synthetic diamonds that require education, training, and the right equipment to separate them.
GIA does this (800-421-7250)
We do too.
hope this helps you....

Yes, but can an EXPERT such as yourself tell the difference with reasonable confidence without equipment other than a magnifying glass.
Also what's the going price (roughly) for an independent appraisal?

Dear Joelb
Gem Identification for a diamond is about $ 55.00.
This is what you need first. If the stone is a Diamond, then you'll need a value, the fees for which are generally based on size but probably average around $ 75.00
Unfortunately, there are no inexpensive ways of doing this..... too many sophisticated synthetics and imitations made today.
