Hello,

I have been browsing through the site and have gained a wealth of information. I am a 23 year old with a long time girlfriend who I plan on asking to marry me in the near future. I have been saving my pennies and am finally ready to start the process for the engagement ring. I had originally planned to spend around 8K on the ring.

I would like to use a jeweler who her family has used for almost 15 years. He hand makes the settings and all of the rings I have seen of his have been beautiful. I visited him today and he proceeded to show me a ring with the following specs:

GIA Certified (I have a copy of the certificate in front of me)

Emerald Cut (its actually an Asscher, this is the cut the GF wants, and I was informed that GIA does not grade "Assher" cuts as they are simply variations of an Emerald Cut

Measurements: 6.18 X5.76 X 4.06 mm

Weight: 1.26 CT

Depth: 70.5%
Table 59%
Girdle: Slightly Thick to Thick
Cutlet None

Finish:
Polish - Good
Symmetry - Good

Clarity Grade VVS2
Color Grade F
Flourescence - None

The ring had Platinum Setting with 2 side stones. I believe the ring he showed me had side stones totaling either .5 carrats or .5 carrats each, I cannot remember exactly the specs on these, but they looked just as brilliant as the center stone was

He was unable to give an exact price, but mentioned that her family was a good customer and he would be able to work with me to get it around $10K. In addition he mentioned being able to give me a deal to back out the sales tax, etc. He seemed very reputable and according her family, has extremely fine tastes when it comes to diamonds.

I know that it hard to make judgements without actually seeing something, but from the diamods I have see, it looke amazing. I plan on revisiting him in a few weeks, as he has plans to show me a few other diamonds that may fit my original price range. To him, paying an extra 1500-2000 now and receiving a stone with a higher grade and weight, might be worth it 20 years from now from both an emotional standpoint and an investment standpoint.

Please post any thoughts you have on the specs. of this stone/ring as it is very helpful for me to guage my purchase.
