I found a diamond that is princess cut, but it is a rectangle and not a square. I don't remember the specifics, but the percentages were in the low 70's, and everything else about the cut were good markings. How unusual is this, and would it make a good purchase?

The ideal for a princess cut is a square. Refer to the AGA charts in the tutorials on this site to see the proper tolerances for the different grades.

By cutting the stone in a rectangle versus a square, the cutter retains alot more weight from the rough. Also it is more difficult to find a setting since most well cut princess cut diamonds are square. Also using just a couple of numbers won't tell you how bright the stone is.
