There are such things as green diamonds though they are extremely rare. The color is generally a light tinge of green. The green is caused by contact with a radioactive source at some point in its lifetime deep underground. Many times the green is only surface deep and is therefore removed when the diamond is polished. In more rare cases the entire bodycolor is a light green. Again, these stones are extremely rare and expensive.
The best way to accurately determine if any rough specimen is real diamond is to have a trained gemologist examine it.
There are many other green gems and minerals. Characteristics such as shape, color, transparency, luster, inclusions, cleavage and surface patterns are good indicators of many minerals.
