It's best if you take it to an appraiser to identify it for you.

These days it's hard even for a jeweler to tell with the man-made stones getting more popular. There is no real test for the layman. Except...isn't there a post here somewhere about turning the diamond upside down and seeing or not seeing a black dot? Who posted that again?? :o

No.

With the myriad of fakes, simulants, treatments and synthetics available on the market, it’s really pretty difficult to make an accurate determination. If you're making an important decision based on your conclusion, seek professional assistance. That said, some are easier than others and there are some quick things to look for to get a clue.

1) The read through test is for unmounted round diamonds. Most of the synthetics look quite different from the back when placed over text of a black dot. With a diamond, you will barely be able to tell when the stone is over the text and when it’s not. With a CZ and glass you can almost ‘read’.

2) CZ is quite a bit heavier than diamond. With an unmounted stone and a scale you can quickly tell by measuring and weighing the stone.

3) CZ and most other simulants will wear differently from diamond. If the stone is mounted and has been worn for a while, you can sometimes see some distinctive wear around the facet junctions. They also tend to look quite different when they’re dirty.

4) Thermal testers work nicely with several, but not all, of the simulants. Most jewelry stores and pawn shops have one of these at the counter and will let you use it for free if you ask.

Special note: Do not use the classic test where you scratch a piece of glass or where you use another diamond to scratch the table of the suspect stone. Many simulants will scratch glass as well as a diamond and a genuine diamond can scratch another diamond. These tests aren’t conclusive and result in damage to your stone, your piece glass, or both.
