new to all this.. saw a 2 ct. triangle cut -g -. si 1. had no point where culet is. saw a small black triangle when viewed through table. the point had been removed. why was this done? is this common? thank you for any elementary help.

You are probably talking about the culet. In some diamonds this is done and others it is not. It's best to have one with very small to no culet though because a larger culet will lose light return and if large enough will even reflect mutiple times in the diamond.
