The reason the price is less first of all is probably because it has an EGL lab report versus a GIA one. They are generally not as strict with color and clarity, plus they use inflated appraisals to make you think you are getting a deal. Secondly the stone is overly deep and will look smallish for the weight. It would be like buying a steak with an extra 20% fat.

Many ‘appraisals’ aren’t very helpful. Make sure you understand what they mean by the value that they are assigning. It’s often explained in the fine print on the back or at the bottom of the appraisal and it probably means something very different than what you think. EGL-USA is affiliated with just such a company and their stones are often accompanied by an unsigned report giving a theoretical asking price at an unnamed, unidentifiable, and very expensive store. It’s like saying gas is worth $8/gal. because some gas station somewhere might try to charge that much. They don’t even need to make any sales, just ask a price. A 50% or 90% savings may not be a bargain if you don’t understand what it’s discounting FROM.
