My girlfriend has selected the ring she wants, which is a 1/2 ct. ideal cut solitaire priced at $2,799 at a national chain jeweler. I am wondering if I should dicker with them on this price or not. If so, how should I go about it and what might I expect? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Check out prices on www.pricescope.com. You'll get an idea of what's around, though brick n mortar mark-ups are higher.

Ask the store if their diamonds have GIA or AGS certs and ask for a Sarin report. Make sure you know what you are getting for the money. Ideal cut means different things to different people.

I have always been a little leary of national chains.....unless it's Tiffany's or something like that....just me. As far as negotiating, absolutely. I have done so myself, with success and always feel much better about the purchase .

I think you should look on line at some diamond sites and compare to see if you got the best deal for your money!
