My boyfriend just bought me a ring that is white gold with three .25 caret diamonds. The center diamond has what looks like a small black mark on the inside of the diamond. I wasn't sure if this was a common flaw in diamonds or if perhaps something was underneath the diamond, or my ring is just not that good. It definately appears to be a black mark inside the diamond. If anyone has seen this before or knows what it could be I appreciate your responses.

I'm totally confused!

Diamonds often have small crystals of other minerals in them. This can include garnets, sapphire, and quite a few other things. Even other diamonds! These will regularly appear as a dark spot in the stone when viewed in the right lighting.

The presence of these things will cause the stone to be less expensive than an otherwise similar stone that doesn’t have them but this is good news, not bad. It means that your boyfriend has more money left over to spend on you! Gunk on the back makes these things show up better against the darker background and cleaning the back of the stone usually helps.

The jeweler where he got the ring may be able to trade out that stone for another if it bugs you although there may be a fee for this. If he bought it recently, there also may be a program at the jeweler that will allow him to trade it in for something that is completely different in order to get a ring that's perfect for you. Ask soon because these sorts of offers are usually only available for a short time after the original purchase.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Neil!!

Unless you got the ring within the last 2 weeks, go with Neil's idea that the money he saved might get you something else nice!
