going out on a limb here (ie guessing a bit)

I think it was originally a Russian inspired cut. It's fair to say that its not a common cut and is now only sold worldwide by IGAT diamonds ( A New York company) - it may have been devised by them orginally and the Russian conncetion is simply the diamonds chosen.

Its a modified emerald cut (more base facets giving much more fire) - which is supposed to combine the best of emeral and round brilliants. As is radiant cut, criss cut etc.....

As with lots of these 'new' cuts which have been appearing over the last few years, the internet is kinda helping market them - I'd go as far as to say that the internet is reposnsible for a number of these cuts reaching public attention and holding enough interest to drive sales.

oh, and like all these cuts they efectively 'originate' from an individual stone cutter who does something different with the stone......

Good point, night.

The increase of "Branded" Cuts into the market over the last few years is due to:

1. Increasing market share by Internet Vendors,
2. Supplier Of Choice program by DeBeers which requires that sightholders implement vertical integration into their marketing. No longer is it sufficient to manufacture the goods, you now must know how to market and sell to the retail customer.

DeBeers, themselves have teamed up with LMVH and are going retail by opening a retail store on New York's 5th Avenue this June. They already have retail outlets in London and Japan and will also be opening up a store with LMVH in Los Angeles this October.

Big question is whether these branded diamond cuts will catch on with consumers and have the staying power over time to retain their retail price value allowing for Upgrades and Trade-Ins. Case in point is the Jubillee, which is a third-generation clone of the it's sisters; the Queen of Hearts and the Regent.
