We have an opportunity to purchase a 1.78ct, princess cut, SI1, "G" color certified diamond for $9400.00. Is this a good value?
Also, another opportunity we have is to purchase 1.07ct, Natural Pink oval sapphire that is Loupe Clean mined in Madagascar for $180.00. Is this a good value as well?
Thank you for your time.

Princess Cuts are extremely difficult to evaluate on "numbers" alone, certainly not with the info you've provided.

agree with Barry on the diamond...re: pink sapphire - sounds like a goood deal for over a carat of any sapphire...however...prices for these are decided on the following
1) Colour - exact shade of pink is very important- the closer to 'bubblegum' pink or candy pink the pricier it gets. They get cheaper as they get paler and more pastel or more vivid.....
2) Colour saturation - many sapphires show colour zoning (where the colour is stronger in some areas than others) - this decreases price too
Clarity is nothing like as important in coloured stones as in diamonds - though of course the cleaner the stone the more expensive it will be. Sapphires tend to be reasonably clean under 2 carats or so, so you'd hope for loupe clean to be honest - (what Im saying is dont let that particular fact sway your decision)
pink Sapphires have got markedly more expensive in recent years, as have all pink gemstones (you can thank J-Lo and the boy Affleck for that!).
unless it's a rubbish stone 180 dollars is undoubtedly a good price
cheers

Barry: Which numbers do you need from me to evaluate? I have all the paperwork at home (At work now) and would be happy to give you everything that is listed on the certification.
Nightmare: Thank very much for your help and advice on the sapphire. I could post the website that the sapphire is listed in but do not know if that is a no-no on this webpage forum. It shows the gemstone color and specs. Let me know if you would like to see it. Again, thank you very much.

Hi Earl,
I dont THINK that posting a piccy is a problem - I know IM not allowed to as a jeweller, but I think you're fine - one of the moderators will tell me off If Im wrong I have no doubt!
Would be definietly interested in seeing the stone to give you a better opinion!
cheers

For some of these data, you'll need either a Megascope or Sarin analysis.

You're an Air Traffic Controller?!!!!! Impresisve job....I know I'd get too tempted to 'play' with all the planes on approach - probably not recommended!!
The stone looks lovely - what we tend to describe as 'hot pink' (a more vivid pink) - verynice proportions to the face and the step cut will help it sparkle
It's been heat treated which is very normal for Sapphires and doesnt affect them long term - tends to be used to even out and darken colour slightly - obviously it does affect the value a bit (as entirely natural stones are always most expensive)
I would say that 180 dollars is a very fair price - and definitely cheaper than you'd expcet to find it mounted anywhere. bear in mind that the cost of having a ring created (depending largely on which metal you chose) can easily equal or exceed the stone value!
have fun with the planes!

Night: Yeah, I'm a plane talker....where I work isn't O'Hara Intl, but we do have our fair share of planes coming and going. Talked to 380 on my 8 hour shift yesterday.....one loses his voice after 200....but anyway....
I truly appreciate your expertise and opinion on the sapphire. My wife has a 14kt white gold setting with about 30pts of Bagget(sp) diamonds on the sides in which the sapphire will go into. The 1ct round center stone was taken out a while ago and used in another setting, so at least I have that going for me. I figured it would probably cost anywhere from $50-$100 to have a stone mounted. I don't think that is too unreasonable.
With your advice I believe I am going to buy that stone today.
I truly think I missed my calling. I love jewelry and should have gotten into the jewelry business a long time ago.
I will trade you jobs! Thanks again!

Barry: First thanks for the school info, I am truly going to look into it. Secondly, I looked at the certificate to get those numbers and it doesn't list 90% of what you asked. I am going to call the Jewelry store tomorrow to get all my questions answered. I will post as soon as I have the answers.
Thanks again!

Hey everyone,
Didn't log on until tonight, my daughter's birthday today and then had to watch all those "tight ends" running around on the field.
Wanted to tell you it's not problem if you want to post a picture of the stone you're looking at. Go ahead.
Night All,
Birgitte
