What exactly is a hearts and arrows diamond? Is it a special cut? Are there actual hearts on the diamond? A jeweler showed me one and got all "this is a hearts and arrow diamond" on me. Is it more special? More expensive? Or just more hype?

A hearts and arrows diamond is one that has the facets alligned so that when you view the stone under a special viewer upside down, you will see 8 hearts, and when you view the stone face up under the viewer you will see 8 arrows.

With that being said, it must have a very good to excellent symmetry to achieve this and they do take extra time and precision to cut.

Does a hearts and arrows mean that it will be the brightest diamond? Maybe not. We've seen some stones that have a nice hearts and arrows but suffered in the brilliance area at the expense of the pattern sometimes.

We have also seen some that were very bright. We evaluate this on a stone per stone basis.

I do have one manufacture of very fine goods that makes ideal hearts and arrows with a guaranteed light performance. Those are definitely a fine stone.

Most ideal cut diamonds will show an H & A pattern as Jan has previously described. However, many diamonds outside of the ideal cuts will show a very similar effect and that makes it all but impossible for the average consumer to see a difference.

Don't worry too much about the name or the hype that people apply to different diamonds. In my experience, "Ideal Cut", "Signature Cut" “H & A” are one in the same. Read the tutorials, do your homework and use boards like diamond.info to help you along the way.

Good Luck.
