I've worn my wedding ring for the last 15 years straight and now the gold is wearing thin and the setting is falling apart. It was in yellow gold. I took it to a jeweler who told me that they could take the diamonds out and use some of them in a new setting. But they also said that taking the diamonds out of the setting might damage the diamond. I thought diamonds were the hardest thing on earth. Why would this damage the diamond? Should I find another jeweler?

If they are a good jeweler, they should have the proper tools to remove diamonds without harming them. You may want to keep searching.

Diamonds are indeed the hardest form of matter -- in terms of their ability to be scratched (only a diamond can scratch another diamond). However, diamonds can crack or chip easily when subjected to high impact forces such as mounting into a setting.
But, like Jan said, any good jeweler knows how to handle diamonds correctly to avoid any cracks or chips.
