Hi all!
I'm looking at a marquise ring for my girlfriend, and want to get as much value as I can for the money I'm spending. I've found this stone that I think is very nice and have the chance to buy it. Here's what it looks like:
Carat Weight: 1.02
Cut: Very Good
Color Grade: D
Clarity: VVS1
Depth %: 60.1%
Table %: 56%
Symmetry: Good
Polish: Very Good
Girdle: Slightly Thick to Very Thick, with facets
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
It's barely a carat but it also seems a little expensive. It's just over $12,000. I can afford that much but am wondering if there's anything I should be looking at to get better value? I guess I'm wondering if I can sacrifice one of the above characteristics for a slightly bigger stone? Or if I should?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Did you actually see the stone in person? If you wanted something larger you could go even with something as low as a SI1 or VS2 in clarity and G-H in color. That way the size would be maximized. D VVS1 is a very rare grade and you will pay much more for something that you might not be able to tell the difference with the eye.

If you can post your approximate budget, we could really give you some good advice on where to start. You don't need a D VVS1, and you don’t need to be in debt for the rest of your life for you to find a beautiful diamond.

Okay now I'm intrigued Yes I did see the stone and I liked it. But you guys are saying I can do better? I've looked at a few SI1's and even one or two VS1's but so far I don't like what I see through the loop. They have spots. My budget can handle the $12,000 hit, I just want to make sure I get the most for it. And I feel like I want the whitest diamond I can afford. But like I mentioned earlier, if I can find something that is real close and a little bigger, is that the way to go?
Thanks for your help!

Do a search using the price research here and look for something similar. Look for a D color VVS1 and keep the depth between 59.5 & 61.5, the table between 53 & 57. Look for very good or better polish and symmetry. Try to avoid the very thick girdle. Do you have measurements or a copy of the certificate for the stone you've seen?
I think it's a fair price, but I think you can improve slightly on the cut.
