Hi I live in a real small town with no good jewelery store. I'll be spending christmas in Chicago so I'll shop for diamonds there then. In the meantime I thought I'd look online. I was searching one Q&A site that said most internet diamonds are "trade rejects." What in the heck does that mean? Does that mean I shouldn't buy from online places?

What that means is that the *buyers* get the first choice of goods. We are regular buyers of diamonds and our suppliers call us when new goods arrive and we get the first choice to pick from them.
Most internet sites, don't purchase goods for inventory and only list virtual inventories. Many sell stones that they never *see* either.
I'm not saying that you can't buy a nice quality stone on the internet but just trying to answer your question above. That is the point that I think they were trying to make when they said rejects. The stones went to the buyers first and then get listed for the memo guys that don't buy goods.

I would also like to add that I do see a lot of junk stones listed on the internet. It's always nice to *see* the stone that you are purchasing *before* you have to pay for it.

The term "trade rejects" probably does refer to a lot of the junk you see online but that certainly does not mean that all diamonds or online dealers are junk.
As Jan quite rightly pointed out, those of us who do a huge dollar volume and have excellent credit ratings do get the first pick. We constantly purchase the very best and we also have exclusive arrangements with suppliers to give the consumer the unbeatable selection and excellent prices.
Jan is also right in pointing out that it's nice to see a diamond before paying for it. We believe in that and have a showroom filled with fine jewelry and hundreds of diamonds open to the public six days a week. Anyone is welcome to come and browse.
Unfortunately, many are in your situation of not having a local jeweler that they can trust or that they feel cannot offer the selection or price that an internet dealer can. In those cases, people call us and ask us to be their eyes. We take every request seriously and never think of it as just a sale. We use our years of experience and our trusted relationships to procure a perfect diamond for each customer. Each diamond is thoroughly checked by a Graduate Gemologist assuring you of the accuracy of the grade and you'll always get our honest opinion, good or bad. We will give you the tools to make your own informed decision.
This is another reason not to accept anything less than a 30 day, 100% money back guarantee should you not be happy with your purchase. You may also want to consider someone that has taken the extra step. We provide you with a $50,000 dishonesty bond so you can be sure you get what we promise. Make sure that whoever you choose has a clean BBB record. If you choose to buy over the internet, make sure that the site has a secure server certificate. These steps will ensure that your online diamond purchase is a safe and pleasant experience.
In the end, my suggestion to you would be to do your homework, get as much information and education as you can. Make an educated judgment based on your research and testimonials both for online dealers and local retailers. Either can be a pleasant experience if you are armed with knowledge.
Good Luck!

Chicago is a very large city. I'm sure there will be something there that will strike you as a beautiful stone. You planned on going in to look anyway right? If you don't find one, I would be very surprised. Start by looking at the Independent Jewelers.

Jan is right; there are loads of stores in Chicago where you can look at diamonds. But if you want the value that the internet gives, you have to be prepared to do your homework, get an education and finally take the plunge.
At the end of the day, if you don’t like what you receive, send it back. That is why, regardless of who you buy from, the 30 day, 100% money back return policy is so important.
You are not the first person to face this dilemma and you wont be the last but thousands have done it and have walked away extremely happy with their purchase and the process.

Actually - there are reputable websites out that that are perfect for small town guys like you looking to get engaged or buy a diamond. If you ask, some of the more reputable sites that do carry their own inventory will even e-mail a picture to you, or, if they don't have the diamond in stock, they can get it in and take a picture. No matter what, with so little inventory, a local jeweler has a hard time beating the price or selection of an internet jeweler...an most local jewelers don't give cash back, let alone a 30 day policy. Plus - there is the tax issue to consider.
