So this might be a stupid question, but I'm looking for an unusual diamond. I saw a yellow diamond in one store I went into taht I really like. The problem is that every other store I've looked at and the people I've talked to tell me the whiter a diamond is the better t is. Are yellow diamonds not as valuable?
I really liked this one ring.

It depends on the type of yellow diamond. There are white diamonds that are not as "white" as they could be and they are said to have a "yellow" color. If a diamond is very yellow, then the jewelers market it as a "yellow" diamond, in other words, "it's suppose to be that way." Many people really like the way a yellow diamond looks, but even more prefer the traditional white.

Agree with sparkllvr. Check out this beauty.
If you want a yellow diamond, the more 'yellow' it is the better.
Conversely if you want a colorless diamond, the more colorless the better.
What you don't want is somewhere in the middle... yuck!

I'll agree with 95% of what was said. The only thing I disagree with is (Sorry Highfly )
I honestly believe that every diamond has its pros & cons and each should be judged by the person buying it. I've seen many K-L-M+ color diamonds that are warm and bright. A big difference to a D color but nevertheless beautiful.

Once a diamond becomes a fancy yellow color which is below a Z on the color scale the prices start to go up on them. I would just suggest if you get a fancy colored diamond to make sure that you get a GIA lab report with it so you will know whether it is of natural color or irradiated. The irradiated stones cost much less.

irradiated diamonds should carry a similar cost to a white diamond, with an additional charge (around $250) for the process. Interestingly you can send any diamond you ilke off to the labs (mostly in Holland), they'll irradiate it and you'll end up with a coloured diamond! what they cannot tell you in advance is what colour it'll end up - which could make it all quite amusing! Most fancies tend to end up blue, blue-green or green. Im fairly sure that the trace elements present in the earths srufeace near where a diamond is formed will dictate the colour it will go.....and nitgroen tends to lend itself to blues.
NO irradiated diamond can be a better quality than SI - the process simply doesnt work on cleaner diamonds (as you need tthe inclusions to cause the effect)
natural diamonds are a totally different ball game. Natural red, round brilliant, 0.8 carats.....866,000 dollars in NY last year!

Wow didn't know trher was so much info. I'm still a little confused. if a yellow diamond says "natural" does that mean it hasn't been colored, or that it used to be a "natural" white diamond that now has been "irradiated"

Natural means exactly that. It came out of the ground being naturally yellow. It means that mother nature has taken billions of years to create that diamond.
