Can any one tell me what's the lowest cut I should be looking at? I'm on a budget so I can't get a flawless diamond.

Cut is actually separate from color and clarity. Diamonds are graded by the 4 C's.
They are clarity, color, cut grade and carat weight. You can get a really nice eye clean stone in the SI1 range and if you stay I and above in color you won't see a noticable yellow tinge. The cut grade is much harder to judge. Make sure you get a GIA or AGS lab report on your stone and look for a professional to help you with the cut grade. If the stone is real real sparkly to your eye then you have a nice one.

Can you give a little more information? The shape of the diamond and your budget would really help us to help you.

I'm looking for a round diamond. I heard they catch the light the best. And I'm only able to spend about $2000, hopefully with some kind of payment plan.

Bluedanube,
Hers is my opinion of what you may want to look for. Other people will have other opinions
based on what they believe to be the best qualities in a diamond. Some will suggest a larger carat weight, some will suggest a higher color but this is my suggestion based on what I think is common sense.
Look for something around 0.70Ct+/-. To stay in your budget, you should look for something in the I-J-K range and SI2 or better. Look for a well cut diamond with depth between 58.6 & 63 and table between 53 & 60. If you get to a J - K color, look for a diamond with medium or strong blue flourecense. This will have a whitening affect on the diamond.
That along with a 14ct gold solitaire setting should get you around the $2000 mark. Make sure you allow for sales tax if you buy from a local jeweler.
Good luck!

Rock
Thanks for all the info. I had no idea where to begin. Now I have a direction. Don't care if it's not everybody's direction. It seems like a good place to start to me. Thanks!
