I am going to purchase a 1.5 carat princess cut diamond with I color VS1 clarity very very good cut and the ring has eight princess cut diamonds in the band that equal 1.25 carats. Their color is probably an I-J and Clarity is around VS2-SI1 all for 10,500. Thanks in advance for any opinions or suggestions.

Hi Smitty, first of all congratulations!!

The ring you described sounds gorgeous, and the price tag you mentioned sounds well within ballpark. I think if you post a picture of the ring and/or more details on the stone we'll be able to give you more thoughts.

Again, congrats on your upcoming engagement!

I don't think anyone can rendor you an educated opinion on your possible ring purchase without seeing more details and maybe even the ring itself.

I would say to make sure that you get a center stone with a GIA lab report to start with. You would need to know much more about the cut of the diamond to tell if it is a good deal or not. It also wouldn't hurt to get a light performance analysis on the center stone too because you can't just go by a few numbers to tell you how bright a stone is without *seeing* it. Also the quality of the stones in the mounting and setting quality can make a big difference in the price of the total ring too.

You might want to check out some diamond tutuorials before your purchase as well. Happy shopping.

Gosh Smitty it sounds like a great stone. where did you find it? I'm still looking and I'm discouraged with the prices i'm finding. Also, has anyone ever heard of a jeweler showing a COPY of a GIA cert?? Why won't they let me see the original? They said I could get it appraised but I'd have to pay. Why should I get it appraised again if it supposedly already has a GIA cert? Sorry about rambling....

Thanks for all of the support. I will post a pic of the ring after it is made. THey had to customize the ring . But it is GIA certed and when I get the cert from the jeweller I will post all of the info.

To answer your question Jolene. GIA only does a lab report with the color and clarity and plot of the stone as well as a few dimensions. You will notice that you won't see a price on a GIA lab report. Also most insurance companies won't insure a loose stone so you will more than likey get it mounted. So your appraiser will figure a price for the stone based on the 4 C's and also the mounting.

Make sure your appraiser has the proper credentials such as being a Gemologist and has taken appraisal training.

These organizations are ASA, ISA, NAJA.
