there's nothing bad per se with 'cleaning' a diamond by using a lasr to remove imperfections...however...it does materially affect the value as you've altered the natural item. Its only REALLY bad if the seller doesnt tell you and sells you the diamond at the same price as an unlasered one.
Also...i imagine that they're just marketing...! Why not make a feature out of it? The average punter doesnt know its bad.....

It's usually a good thing for the guy who bought a stone with a big old black spot dead smack in the middle of the diamond but usually not for you!
Laser drilling WILL help remove the black spot but then your diamond looks like a piece of Swiss cheese when viewed under a loupe.
Is it a bad thing? I guess like everything else, beauty lies in the hands of the beholder and you do get what you pay for.

Mostly when a stone is laser drilled it is done so to take out a large black deposit that will show up to the naked eye. However we don't choose to carry laser drilled diamonds or clarity enhanced stones. If the stone has a GIA lab report, the laser drilling would be noted on the report. If the stone is clarity enhanced or filled GIA won't do a lab report.

Yes, the inscribing is done with a laser but it is just putting a number on the girdle of the diamond. The laser drilling goes much deeper and takes out , usually a dark inclusion, and leaves a tunnel where it has been.

just to slightly add to Jans answer...... Laser inscirbing ihas been instigated by the various assessment labs in order to help ensure the stone you're looking at really is the one in the certificate! helps combat fraud and people faking certificates etc...
