I heard some people said when arguingabout the pirce of diamond; usually should be half of the original price...is it true? I understand it may depends on the store itself...but how could I identify if the price is right??

In general, I think the answer is "no". If you go to one of the online retailers, you will find that they already work on very low margins. This means they have very little to give you in terms of discounts, and no matter what, they will never sell jewelry for less than it costs them. If you go to one of the high-end retailers, they will simply kick you out of the store for being rude. And, if you go to one of the mall retailers, their (generally clueless) salespeople won't have any authority to give you any type of discount beyond what is already offered.
I think the best way to get a good deal on jewelry is to pick a good jeweler that sells at your price/value range, that you trust, and then work with that jeweler to find or make what you need. Ask around for referrals from friends/family that have recently purchased fine jewelry.

Hi Jon,
Well Im reputable and helpful...what sort of diamond would you like?
seriously.....the way you usually find a decent jeweller is by going shopping and making judgements about the people working there. There isn't a list of 'really nice >> con artist' unsurprisingly!
This forum can certainly help you avoid getting screwed on price - if you post up what you're considering any of the experts here can at elast let you know if it's a reasonable figure (though there is no way of giving a 'definite' price without the actual stone)
CZ - reasonbale diamond simulant - very sparkly and pretty...obviously doesnt have diamonds unique features like extreme hardness, durability etc... however blody cheap! I have a cool 14 carat bright orange CZ knocking about somwhere...not exactly nice but very cool! However...you wouldnt usually buy CZ for something like an engagement ring.
What sort of thing you actually looking for? and whats your budget if you dont mind saying...
cheers

I would have thought you could get a beautiful diamond ring for 1500 dollars (quick calculation in head suggests thats around the 1000 UK pounds mark - Im from UK
)
How important are...size of diamond, coulour of diamond and clarity of diamond? Does your lady friend like bling, or more subtle stuff?
cheers

If you post the link to the stone we can certainly have a look and let you know if it looks okay.....

You can use the internet to research about diamonds and diamond cut. A good start would be to read a tutorial on how diamonds are graded. That way you can educate yourself somewhat to know what you are looking for. Check out this tutorial.
