Hi

Was looking thru some rings at local jewelery stores but they seem to have different opinion on which is a better buy - platinum or white gold?

I'm looking for something that is both durable and doesnt change colours after a long time =)

hahaha - and age old problem

platinum : very expensive, very hard, many girls love BECAUSE its platinum (without knowing anything really other thasn it being very expensive). It scratches like a bastard, and the scratches do NOT come out on their own (like with yellow or white gold). Personally Im not a huge fan cos its very cold and looks a bit like stainles steel in my opinion

white gold : not very expensive, warmth of gold, doesnt scratch too badly and the scratches self polish out as with gold.but...as Im sure you know white gold seems to yellow - and very randomly. I have a few friends with untreated white-gold wedding rings and they come and go yellow/white quite a lot -really interesting to be honest! As a result, rhodium plating is the commenest way forward. This seems to be a fairly appropriate treamement which doesnt need re-doing very often (costs peanuts to do anyway) and makes it stay 'white'

dunno if this has helped! Personally Id go white gold every time, but thats just me......oh, well Id start with mokume-gane white/yellow B)

Here is what I always tell my customers. If you are planning on keeping the ring for years and years to come than I sugest platinum. I say this because platinum is longer lasting not too mention more durable. However, if you are planning on changing your ring preference a few years down the road for anniversary purposes or other reasons than I would sugest white gold. It really wouldn't make sence to get platinum if the ring is a temporary purchase. Although, it really comes down to personal preference. I have a white gold wedding band, but my wife has platinum. So it really depends on what's right for you. Good luck....

You mentioned that you didn't want the ring to change colors over time, then I would go with platinum. White gold will need to be re- rhodiumed over time because it can wear off leaving a subtle yellow tinge to your ring. Platinum is definitely durable. I've seen many rings from other era's that are still gorgeous. B)

I used to have a yellow gold ring and changed it to platinum but didn't notice any difference in wear as far as scratching easier.

Did I read somewhere (this site? I can't remember....) that platinum is non-allergenic? Is that true?

Platinum used in jewelry is actually a mixture of a few different metals. It can be mixed with palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium. There are women who are very sensitive to the alloys used to dilute gold for fine jewelry. For women with that type of sensitivity, platinum’s purity is the way to go since its purity makes it hypoallergenic and also because of it’s of its purity, platinum jewelry will not tarnish and needs little care.
