I noticed that on this board, or in general men would rather get a D and SI2 than a J (which is still near-colorless like H for example) and a flawless diamond. I wonder why?
There is nothing more appealing to a woman, than the fact that her diamond is clean inside. No needles, no clouds, no spots of anykind - even invisible. If you think that she likes her VVS1 ring, just watch her friend get and F or and IF clarity ring (even with a worse color)!
So there is my first advice - get a flawless diamond and compromise on the color. Anything higher than a J would be as beautiful as a D and the slight tint in a J is only seen from very very close and under a certain angle.
My second advice is to never compromise on the cut, the polish and the symmetry. Stay between 60 and 62 of depth and 55 -57 table for round cuts and you are likely to have a most radiant stone.

The result of the above pieces of advice would be an incredible, sparkly ring, with the added bonus of her knowing and telling her girlfriends that her diamond is Flawless. A "D" cant compare with a "Flawless", especially among girls =)
Believe me - you wont regret it! And SHE will be happy!

Here is description of my ring:
1.40k round
ideal cut (61.7 depth /57 table), no cutlet, no flourescence, t-m girdle
IF clarity, J color

congrats - sounds beautiful!

Id tend to agree with you - especially when the colour of the stone is always being compared to skin tone, NOT something white....but there is a general feeling that you should go as white as possible. I have a very good customer (lady) who wont buy anything which ISNT D....but is happy to go to VS-2 clarity - her view being that no-ones eyes are ood enough to spot something at that size.....

I think it comes down to personal taste, or more often what you've read or your mates have told you!

Night has hit the nail on it's head. Personal preference. That's why they make cars in so many different colors! :D
