I have a 1/2 carat, rose cut diamond in an antique setting that I'd like to sell. I'm also interested in purchasing a new ring. Can anyone advise me as to a logical way to proceed? Is it best to try to sell the old ring to the jeweler I'm going to buy the new one from or is it best to try to sell the old ring by some other means?

best answer to that is to wander down to a jewellers and see what they'll give you for the old ring! It isn't likly to be a great offer, but may be enough for you if you're buying something new. If you buy the new ring from them they'll likely do a better deal all round. its a bit like part-exing a car!
If it isn't enouhg, you can try selling privately...but unless you go the eBay route (relatively low transaction average)...then it can be tricky.

Keep the ring! You won’t get much for it and if you go to trade, most will just add the price of the trade to the sale price. Try and find a better way to use the ring. Maybe turn it in to a pendant?

Since the one that you have is a vintage style ring you should check with people in your area that sell this type of jewelry. They have a demand for this style of jewelry and you are likely to get a better price.
