Hi...
A "graded" diamond is one that has been evaluated for carat weight, color, clarity, and (sometimes) cut. A graded diamond will usually be accompanied by a grading report or certificate that describes the stone's physical characteristics (the "4 Cs," measurements, cut style, culet size, fluorescence, etc.). Generally, you will want to look for diamonds that have been graded by GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or AGS (American Gem Society), as these organizations run independent labs and have nothing to gain by making a diamond look better on paper than it really is (as opposed to a jeweler who operates an in-house lab and might claim a diamond is of higher quality than it actually is in order to sell it quickly or justify an inflated asking price). There are other independent labs out there, but do some research on them before buying stones they've graded. Consistenty and conservatism are key, and some labs just don't cut it. Graded diamonds (especially those graded by GIA or AGS) tend to sell at a premium, but it's probably worth a little more money to know exactly what it is you're buying. Hope this helps.
