I proposed to my boyfriend on Feb 28th (AHHHH!) being a leap year! We don't really have a ring budget at the moment but I have spotted a ring on ebay that I like the look of. Just wondering if ayone will have a look for me an tell me what you think - the reserve on the item is £150 (think approx around $300) I know that kind of budget is lame but I just want something to make it official at the moment until we have more money to spare.

Anyway it's not the price or seller that is worrying me - It's that it's only been certified ny the ring manfacturers 'in house' gemologist. So to me the specs seem quite good for the price above but realy am I looking for it to be a grade or two lower on clarity etc. if it is not GIA or other certified?

Thanks

Dear Claire

Congratulations on your engagement. Don't worry about your budget, get the prettiest ring you can find. Its not about having the biggest flashiest ring, its about having the right guy. I love my engagement ring - am lucky enough that its Tiffanys which is what I always dreamed of (since watching the film at an impressionable age). There are so many pretty stones, diamonds and others, so find one you like and go for it.

Hi Claire,

Congrats on geting engaged!

I had a look at the item, but obviously the auction has been closed. It looked very nice, but with regards to inhouse valuation etc... This is a tricky one, as it really has to come down to trust in someone you have never/will never meet! In theory it makes no real difference whether it is a GIA, FGA, IGA etc certified diamond appraiser or an in house chap - entirely depends on how capable they are at approasing, and of coruse, how honest. We've had several incidents of separate experts giving different colur and clarity ratings on the same stones! (obivously only the borderline cases)......

I would guess in this instance that they had set the reserve too low as you're right in saying this was a VERY good price for a stone like this.

Good luck in your search
