We are looking for a diamond that is .50 or so and were wondering about it being GIA certified. 2 different jewlers said that it "wasn't worth it "to get it certified because we are only spending around $1,000 -1,500 and that they would do it but it would cost $150.00-$300.00 more. They said it dosn't matter so much for that small of a diamond. So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on this. Thanks!!

The cost of having a 0.50 carat diamond lab graded is more like $65.00 with the option of having it laser inscribed with the lab report number on the girdle edge for just a bit more. There are thousands of lab graded diamonds available with GIA or AGS grading in the weight category you are considering. Many of our suppliers provide GIA or AGS diamond grading reports for their production starting at 0.30 carats. If the jeweler isn't willing to send the diamond to the GIA or AGS laboratory for grading, it is most likely because he / she knows that it won't come back as represented. Insist on a lab graded diamond and insist on a full proportions analysis so that your jeweler can't hide profit in a poorly cut diamond. The proportions of a diamond can have a 60% impact upon the selling price!
