Please help...my husband and I are going to the Caribbean in February and are looking to upgrage my engagement ring while there. We are doing research to negotiate while there. The only thing is, of course, every time we speak to a jeweler in the u.s., they say the quality of their diamonds is better than what jewelers receive in the caribbean. Is this true? Also, I spoke to a jeweler up here about a specific ring...round 1.01 and she said all her diamonds are cut with 90 to 100 facets... and that other jewelers would have only 50-70. I thought they were only supposed to have 50-70. Why is it that jewelers in the caribbean have better prices
caribbean vs u.s.

I just wrote a lengthy reply and my computer dumped it before I could send it. So here goes again
My wife and I are also going to the caribbean in Feb on a Royal Caribean Cruise. We plan to purchase some jewlery in St Thomas.
We were there 2 years ago and purchased a tennis braclet. We listened to a lecture on the ship about shopping for diamonds (I think he gets a cut) and he told us to go to Diamonds International. We found a tennis braclet there for $2300. I wasnt really planning to buy so we left and did some $2000. I laughed and started to leave and they came down to $1800 and offered me a beer. Several beers later we left with the braclet for $1575. When we got back to St Louis, I had it appraised at a local jewler and it came back at $2800. We are very pleased with our purchase but Im sure I couldnt have negociated that well if I was really there to purchase. This trip will be more difficult.
I would like to hear some expert opinions on the Caribbean and Diamonds International.
The prices that I see on the net for diamonds look pretty good Im not sure I can beat these prices but I am going to try.
I will go armed with prices from Blue Nile, Diamonds.net an this site. I will also shop local jewlery stores to become familiar with the look of the stones.
Good Luck Dave
