What are the pros and cons of both? All along, I've felt so sure that I've wanted a platinum engagement ring, but now that we're finally looking, I've been hearing negative comments on platinum (scratching and denting). Any advice?

Hi Cara,

Platinum is by far the best metal used for jewelry. Since it contains less impurities, such as Platinum 950- which is 95% pure platinum and 5% Iridium or Ruthenium, it is less likely to lose its luster. For example, 18K gold contains 75% pure gold and 25% impure metals such as silver, copper, nickel, etc.. which will oxidize quicker than the Gold will.

Also, all metals have a tendancy to get scratched, but Platinum would need less metal removed to make it perfect again. Gold, on the other hand, will dent easier and require more metal to be removed to rectify the issue.

The only selling point for Gold is the price: $350/ounce compared to $650 for Platinum.

I'd stick with Platinum, you'll enjoy it for a very long time.

What is the going price for platinum now? Is it according to ounce? How many ounces do you think a size 5 ring will be?
